  14. I run a program that searchs for, and issues advisory cancels for,
  15. large binaries in the akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, and sci
  16. hierarchies.

  18. I have issued 19 cancels for large binary files (average size 249,871
  19. characters - total size 4,747,542 characters) posted to 11 different
  20. unmoderated discussion groups in the rec, news, misc, comp, and sci
  21. hierarchies (with cross-posts into alt and fidospk groups) as
  22. follows:
  23.    7 rec.sport.waterski
  24.    3 comp.lang.javascript
  25.    1 rec.nude
  26.    1 rec.games.video.nintendo
  27.    1 rec.games.frp.dnd
  28.    1 rec.crafts.textiles.quilting
  29.    1 news.newusers.questions
  30.    1 misc.forsale.computers.pc-specific.cards.video
  31.    1 sci.skeptic
  32.     fidospk.politics
  33.     alt.war
  34.     alt.conspiracy
  35.     alt.business.misc
  36.     alt.society.sovereign
  37.    1 comp.sys.amiga.misc
  38.    1 comp.os.ms-windows.video

  40. The cancels in non-targeted groups are an unavoidable consequence of
  41. the way cancels work.  A cross-posted article has only one Message-ID.
  42. When it is canceled from one group it is canceled from all groups.

  47. If you want to see exactly which file was deleted from a particular
  48. group, read the full report in news.admin.net-abuse.announce.  Look
  49. for AR279 in the subject.  The full report can also be found in

  52. The criteria used to search for this batch of large binaries were:
  53.    NEWSGROUPS: Unmoderated akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, or sci
  54.            (except for comp.binaries.apple2 and rec.games.bolo)
  55.    BINARY: (base64, binhex, uuencode, and xbtoa encoded files, etc.)
  56.    SIZE: > 100,000 characters (size * number of parts, if multi-part)

  58. If you must post a binary to Usenet, please post it *only* to an
  59. appropriate binaries newsgroup such as alt.binaries.misc, and do *not*
  60. crosspost it to non-binaries groups.  This permits news administrators
  61. and users to decide for themselves whether to receive binary files.
